Check your email often…Avalon School has gone green!
STEM class has started taking apart pallets in preparation for building a table. The class is also making pumpkins from bottle bottoms and we are starting construction of the mini greenhouse to go with the coldframe. Mrs Gilhooley’s financial literacy class organized the “ Pretty in Pink” breast cancer fundraiser in the Avalon and Stone Harbor Schools. The $630.00 that we raised has been donated to two local charities that offer assistance for all types of cancer, Love of Linda Cancer Fund in Cape May County and Gilda's Club of South Jersey in Linwood. In cross-curricular projects between Social Studies and Art (Mrs. Funk & Mrs. Farina), the fifth grade students have made Egyptian mummies and Egyptian reed boats; the sixth grade students have made gargoyles and stained glass windows.
The NJHS under the direction of Mrs. Fottrell sold 100% fruit juice during lunch in the month of November to raise money for a leadership workshop that the members would like to attend in the spring. From Mrs. Fottrell and the National Junior Honor Society: Thank you for your generosity in donating food to our Annual Food Drive. Over 8 boxes of nonperishable food items were delivered to the Holy Redeemer Food Bank here in Cape May County. We are sure that those in need this holiday season greatly appreciated all that you did. Physical Education Classes participated in “Spooky Gym Week” the last week in October as part of a 10 year tradition. Students used flashlights to gather ghosts that were hidden underneath cones and used toilet paper to “Mummy Wrap” each other. Other Halloween games and activities were played throughout the week along with a serving of juice and snacks. On Wednesday,, November 25th a Turkey Trot will take place on our beautiful new track and afterward, students will be treated to a showing of “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” along with popcorn and water bottles.
From our School Nurses: The state mandated student health screenings will begin in December and run until completed over the next few months. Any problems or concerns noted will be reported to home as soon as possible. If anyone has any questions or concerns they can contact Mrs. Bossuyt. Screenings will be done during PE, study halls, and specials as they are able to be excused. Screenings include: Height, Weight, Blood Pressure, Vision, and Hearing, and Scoliosis screenings for those 10 and older. Thank you.
If we have a delayed opening, school will start at 10:00 and be dismissed at the regular time. This will allow us to open after road conditions or tide/flood conditions improve in the morning. In the event that we are is unable to provide transportation, we may open without transportation, only if it is deemed safe for the staff and students to come to school. We will notify you through the School Messenger Emergency Notification System. Please be sure your contact information is current.
